Mulberry

Pokok mulberry di belakang rumah. Buahnya masam-masam manis. Daunnya masak lemak sedap juga. Orang Cina saya dengar suka buat sup. Baik untuk kesihatan.

Tuntung River terrapin

River terrapin or its scientific name Batagur baska. It was my youngest daughter favorite pet. She was about 2 years old. She called it Kua-kua for the Malay word kura-kura. Then one Friday, it just disappeared. 

Tuntung ni mula-mula anak saya bela dalam akuariumnya. Bila dah agak besar dia masukkan dalam kolam. Lama dia tinggal di kolam. Selalu keluar dan masuk balik. Bila pagi suka berjemur tengah panas. Dah jinak dan selalu minta makan. Sayang, satu hari dia pergi dan tak balik-balik.

Keruh ke jernih Cloudy water to crystal clear

For my aquaponic system I used 2 small water pumps. One for filtering and the other one to create mini water fall to aerate the water. Once, one of the pumps failed. I didn't replace it for about a week. With only one pump, I opted to aerate the water without running it through the filter aka growing container. The pond turned cloudy. Within two days or so after replacing the faulty pump and running the water through the filter,  the pond came back to normal. Clear water.

Satu pam rosak. Terpaksa buat pilihan dengan utamakan nyawa ikan. Oksigenkan air tanpa ditapis. Selepas seminggu air kolam sangat keruh. Bila dapat pam baru, kolam mini beroperasi seperti sedia kala. Air jernih semula selepas dua hari.

Pokok keladi Yam

A friend amazed by the size of the plant asked me, " Did you put some soil inside the tub?". I said, "No, only gravels inside". 

Lihat foto bagaimana pokok keladi cepat membesar dan membiak dalam sistem akuaponik. Pokok keladi saya pilih sebab ia paling sesuai untuk hiasan di depan rumah. Batangnya masak lemak atau asam pedas pun sedap. Ubinya goreng atau buat pengat.

Saya belum dapat lagi tanam pokok lain. Satu hari mungkin pokok tomato yang subur dan berbuah lebat.

Air Jernih Crystal clear water

See the photos below. Crystal clear water. Happy fishes supported by equally happy micro-organism and worms in the planting box. These worms can also be a food for the fishes. When you go for a holiday or "balik kampung", do not worry about your fishes not getting any food. They can be left without you providing food for a week or two. No problem.

Air kolam jernih dengan sistem akuaponik. Kotak tanaman berfungsi sebagai penapis yang menapis kotoran dari kolam. Ini termasuk sampah kecil dan najis ikan. Di dalam kotak tanaman ada banyak cacing dan bakteria. Mereka menukarkan bahan kumuh ikan kepada nutrien yang boleh diserap oleh akar tanaman.

Gunakan makanan ikan yang tidak menyebabkan keladak untuk air kolam yang lebih jernih. Jika ikan untuk hidangan dapur yang dibela dan anda tidak kisah air yang agak keruh, boleh gunakan pellet makanan ikan.
